Career Central is a comprehensive yet user-friendly web-based platform which guides senior secondary school students to employment pathways. Thanks to our talented team at LuminateOne, users tap into Career Central via their mobile phones with the recent addition of iOS and Android applications.
The Career Central success story began in 2012 when then Matamata College careers advisor Sue Hancock approached me about working together on Career Central. This has now grown from a very simple file-maker programme to a fully comprehensive web-based career management system.
When initially approached to develop the product, I had no idea how big it would become. I love to see every day how many students and teachers throughout NZ interact with Career Central. I am very proud of what we have created and pleased we have been able to help so many students and teachers.
Now working full-time on Career Central, Sue Hancock is also a member of Waikato CATE (Careers & Transition Education Association) and keeps in touch with what’s happening in career education in order to fully understand the needs of those working in the sector.
Career Central was designed to follow career development theory and suit New Zealand secondary schools. To her, the mobile apps were a logical "next step" in the evolution of Career Central.
The apps offer students a simple way to update their career profiles. Once downloaded, students can update their details, add to their skills, values or personal qualities, and even create a CV. The apps allow students to save jobs of interest, and search and save courses and tertiary education providers they are considering.
Students also receive notifications to the apps from their teachers and careers’ advisors. Notifications include event invites, task reminders and information relevant to their career interests.
The team at LuminateOne initially analysed Career Central and established exactly what was required. We identified the issue, developed a concept and made it happen. A collaborative approach is vital in any such project. Design works when users are happy.
LuminateOne initially consulted with Career Central about creating a design that works. Options were explored for the “architecture” and navigation of the mobile applications including graphics, text and links. Like all LuminateOne projects, the mobile apps for Career Central were designed to be user-friendly, involving comprehensive testing and continuous delivery. The keys for LuminateOne are communication, documentation/training and maintenance/monitoring.
Sue Hancock says the Career Central system helps students take ownership of their future employment plan, with advice, support and encouragement available from school careers' advisors and parents.
Using Career Central, students identify their own skills and qualities which school careers advisors match with the most suitable future job options and opportunities.
Also, thanks to our team at LuminateOne, information on careers is updated automatically, while users can be assured of the strictest security and confidentiality safeguards.
