An online educational resource developed by LuminateOne is the legacy of an inspirational secondary school teacher.
Mary Kerrigan, who passed away in 2020, provided the framework for EBE (Everything Business Education).
Taking over as project manager, university lecturer Lloyd Gutteridge says business studies has not been well covered in the past.
Lloyd wrote the only New Zealand textbook on the subject in 2011, which he says highlights the “gulf and void” in resources.
He and Mary talked about the issue, with teachers just keeping one step ahead of their students.
“An online resource was something we both wanted, but we lacked the IT experience,” says Lloyd.
This gap was filled by LuminateOne, with director Tim Hampton and Mary Kerrigan having initial discussions.
The concept was to provide an online teaching resource which highlighted business success stories.
Lloyd says the case studies paint a true picture of what it takes to succeed in business.
This will be even more “stark” post-Covid, he says.
Mary had contacted many businesses, securing interviews for the website.
“She had done the grunt-work,” says Lloyd.
Case studies feature a range of businesses, from non-profits to large corporates.
Lloyd says the EBE website is also useful for businesses looking to attract school-leavers.
It currently targets the 16-18-year-old age group, but he says this could easily be extended to Year 10 pupils and “early” university students.
EBE resources are connected to the NCEA Business Studies curriculum.
